Description
Modern Galtean is an efficient syllabic alphabet employed on the fantastic world of Ivalice. Previous form of Galtean, such as Dynast Script, were quite ornate but difficult to read and write. The Arcadian Empire developed this revised script and its use spread with the Empire’s rising influence.
There are no spelling variations in Modern Galtean like the ones found in English and other forms of Galtean. The letter “G” is only used in its hard consonant form, with the letter “J” as its own letter for the soft form. Similarly, the consonant “C” does not exist, in preference to the separate letters “K” and “S”. The letter “Q” is used as a “kw” and no vowel is needed afterwards.
Common consonant combinations found in English are given their own letters in Modern Galtean. Extended or aspirated consonants are noted with a verticle trema ( : ) to the right. The
Vowels have two forms: a short, or “soft”, form and a long, or “hard”, form. The long form is distinguished by a horizontal line beneath the vowel. Extended vowel sounds are noted with a trema ( : ) like extended consonants. The letter “Y” is only used as a consonant.
(Most of the letters are derived from the World Map in FFXII. For letters that didn't exist or I couldn't match to a known word, I drew on other languages, specifically Futhark, Katakana, and Hangeul. The red words between the English and the Galtean are what each letter is called in Galtean.)
